Red Tails, between the Hollywood blockbuster & Real life Heros:

Normally I do not make a review of a movie I haven’t seen yet. Typically we do reviews on films that are already out or ones we’ve seen in the past (this one is scheduled to be released by January 20th by they way).

For this particular film, about the Tuskegee Airmen, however, I think I will make one of those rare exceptions, mainly due to my interest in many famous battles during WWII.

I’ve always had a fascination with this particular part of WWII history, aside from the racial issues involving many black soldiers during this time (both within the respected armed forces they represented, as well as, sadly, in their lives).

What’s sad about this is that so many don't know much about their history, and on how they were involved in WWII and later wars had key roles...especially considering many of them weren’t just white, like the Navajo code talkers during the battle of the pacific; or the drivers in the Redball Express in Europe; and in this case the Tuskegee Airmen...that it would have to take a major movie to realize they had pilots like this back then.

In any case, I’m still glad this film was finally made. And as for someone who had relatives who served in WWII, and currently have some serving both in the U.S. Marine Core, and U.S. Navy prospectively, I not only encourage all to see it, but also do some research on the history this film is based on. You can start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee_Airmen

I’ll be sure to write a full review on the film as soon as I see it…Stay tuned!

  1. I appreciate your enthusiasm for the release of this movie and the story it's telling.

    Good for Black History Month.

And, yes, in all the high school history classes that obsessed on the "World Wars", why is there so little - if any (I certainly don't recall, although I'll admit I wasn't the most tuned in high school student who ever lived) education about these men, their contributions, their sacrifice, and their records, their honours, the racism they faced in spite of their service, and their legacy in the armed forces?

Yes, I agree, it will be good to see this movie bring a new memory of these men.

  3. Just to add to the film, Which I did see with the GF. Yes it was very good, in fact the GF seemed to like it as much as I did, perhaps even more. And it really shows a deeper perspective on the effect and the people involved in WWII..

If anything it made me want to learn more about these Airmen, and the acheivements they did. Yeah it sounds like the bid off for a history lesson, (or a promo for the History Channel) but sometimes you need to look more into areas you normally wouldn't go to get a deeper understanding of events such as these.

As usual I would go into more detail, but I'll just ask you all to see it for yourselves, you wont be dissapointed!
